From the Florida Legislature to the Public Service Commission to the Constitutional Revision Commission, all of these roles have allowed me to represent Floridians and give them a voice in Tallahassee. ![]() I have had the privilege of serving in many different capacities in state government. What is your major accomplishment in public life? It was the first new airport in over 20 years.ġ. I dealt with multiple vendors and hundreds of millions of dollars. I also chaired the Bay County Airport during its relocation - a $350 million, incredibly successful airport. You do not achieve that level of tenure in the service industry unless you take care of your employees. By properly managing the needs of families, our average length of employment is over 20 years. I handled the HR for my restaurant, Captain Anderson’s, for the last 15 years for over 200 employees. I’m focused on improving the state so both businesses and families can succeed. I understand the impact taxes and regulations have on small businesses. I know what it’s like to balance a budget, something all Florida families experience. Tackling challenges in the private sector has given me the real-world experience needed to understand the struggles Floridians face. Taking steps like removing unnecessary fees for our veterans applying for insurance licenses or wanting to work in the fire service are part of the everyday challenges we tackle. This legislative session we looked at different ways to streamline government to make it work better for the customers we serve. So, we worked with state agencies to ensure they were submitting payroll on time. With the mindset of a business owner, I knew this wouldn’t work in the real world, so why were we not best utilizing taxpayers’ dollars? That means every day our teams at DFS had to process payroll, taking time away from other duties serving the taxpayers of Florida. For instance, payroll for state employees was being cut every single day of the week. When I first became CFO, I noticed some inefficiencies which could be improved. This type of first-hand knowledge has proven invaluable since I have become Florida’s CFO. As a small business owner, you are constantly faced with difficulties and have to be smart in the tough decisions you make. Prior to becoming Florida’s CFO, I was co-owner of my family’s restaurant in Panama City, Captain Anderson’s. ![]() We have owned and operated a successful restaurant for the past 50 years.
